Best Sea Fishing Lodges in Norway for Cod, Halibut, Coalfish and Mixed Fishing

Many anglers travel to Norway in search of that once in a lifetime monster catch. With so many different destinations to choose from, we have narrowed the list down to our three top fishing lodges in Norway where we think the chances of catching a potential world record is at their greatest.

Many anglers travel to Northern Norway each year, all with different targets, some fish because they love catching fish, and some people are very focused on a certain species, and their sole aim is to beat their previous PB’s. Norway is a great country for anglers as there are so many different species to fish for. Still, the main draw to Norway must be Halibut fishing, Cod fishing, the ever-growing popularity, and the fishing for Coalfish.

We would class these species as the top three most targeted fish in Norway and attract lots of people. So, with this in mind, we thought we would give you our top three destinations where we believe that targeting and catching a world record fish is a real possibility, as well as our top mixed fishing destination for those looking to target a range of species.

Our Top Sea Fishing Lodges in Norway

Skrei Cod: STEINFJORD

World-Record Cod – 104lb

Throughout the years, Steinfjord has become world-famous for the huge run of the monster Skrei Cod. These are subspecies of the coastal Cod that migrate to the very edges of northern Norway to the main spawning grounds. Here they gorge themselves on the massive shoals of Capelin to build up their energy and be ready for their yearly spawning. The Island of Senja is right in the Skrei Cods’ path and is the perfect spot for sport anglers worldwide to intercept them.

The season for the Skrei Cod is short. The Skrei Cod arrive in numbers from the end of February, and once they have spawned, they drift off around the middle to the end of April.

These vast shoals of giant Cod, some of the most significant found anywhere in the world, can be caught offshore at the camp and specimens over 50lb are not unusual. If you are looking to chase that world record-sized Cod, our exclusive trips to Steinfjord on the coast of Senja takes some beating.

HALIBUT:  HAVÖySUND

Norway’s Biggest Halibut – 418lb (according to the IGFA)

The saying goes, “the more remote the fishing spot, the better the catch,” and nowhere is this truer than with Halibut fishing in Norway. Havøysund, located at the northernmost tip of Norway, has become a mecca for anglers worldwide, drawn by its reputation for producing both impressive numbers and massive sizes of Halibut.

Havøysund’s abundant halibut population thrives thanks to a steady supply of baitfish and strong ocean currents. The peak season for halibut runs from May through early October, with July, August, and September being prime months for high catch rates.

With Halibut primarily feeding on fish, the use of deadbaits and large shads are traditionally used to target this species . Each year, Havøysund yields exceptionally large halibut, earning it a global reputation as a destination for record-breaking catches. If you’re a dedicated trophy hunter in search of the fish of a lifetime, a trip to Havøysund promises an unforgettable fishing adventure.

COALFISH: Å on the lofoten islands

World-record Coalfish – 22.7KG or 50lb

The charming village of Å, perched at the end of the Lofoten Islands, has earned worldwide fame as a hotspot for massive shoals of Coalfish. Known for their strong fight and impressive size, Coalfish are a growing favourite among sport fishers, and in the waters around Å, they can reach truly remarkable sizes— with the current Norway record standing at an incredible 22.7 kg (50 lbs).

Anglers in Å use a variety of techniques, from thrilling surface fishing with poppers to vertical jigging, and occasionally hook giants accidentally on baits meant for Halibut.

Å’s exceptional Coalfish fishing owes much to its powerful maelstroms, the largest in the world. These intense currents attract large numbers of Coalfish, which thrive in fast-moving water. For targeting these fish in turbulent conditions, topwater lure fishing with poppers or shallow-diving lures retrieved at high speed is incredibly effective. Northern Norway offers travelling anglers an unforgettable experience with breathtaking scenery and a fishing adventure like no other.

MIXED SPECIES: Vesteralen

Vesterålen, in northern Norway, is surrounded by some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the country and is an ideal destination for travelling anglers looking for a diverse week of fishing. This sea-angling hotspot offers nearly everything Norway is renowned for, from giant Cod, Halibut, and Coalfish to Ling, Redfish, Plaice, and Wolffish.

Fishing in the nutrient-rich North Sea, you’ll experience different species at different times of the year. During the cooler months of April and May, Vesterålen offers exceptional Cod fishing, with the famous Skrei Cod migrating close enough to be easily accessible. As the waters warm, Halibut becomes the star of the season, and anglers can choose between targeting them in the fjords or the open sea.

One of Vesterålen’s greatest advantages is the support of two full-time guides who are available to assist anglers of all experience levels. They can even join you on your boat for a day, pointing out the best spots and sharing local tips. Whether you’re looking for advice on targeting specific species or just need some guidance, the guides are dedicated to making your fishing experience as rewarding as possible.
