Crocodile Bay fishing report – June 2021

Its fantastic to see that the summer Marlin have started to move into the waters of Crocodile bay this month. Its also great to see that the Yellowfin numbers are back up to where they should be!

June 2021

Have had a little flurry of sailfish lately as well as marlín offshore. As we move closer to July and August we will get our “summer” marlin season. Most of the year we see blue marlin, but this time of year some black and striped marlin will be cruising the local waters. Dorado won’t be around in large numbers but if one shows up in the lure spread, it will be a big one.

Yellowfin tuna are out and about in all sizes. Lots of 15 to 30 lb fish and several as big as 100 lbs. Tuna have made a great recovery since moving commercial tuna fishing boats out to 45 miles in 2014. A new law in the Costa Rican Congress was calling for a move to 60 miles and sport fishermen claim they need the new law to be out more than 100 miles. The Congress seems stuck on 80 miles which would almost double the protected area but the debate is not over yet.

Inshore the action has been much more consistent. Lots of African pompano around and the roosterfish have been very cooperative. Plenty of days with a dozen or more roosters per boat and the time of the year, when the big fish are more plentiful, has arrived. Several fish over 50 pounds has been caught this last week. By law roosterfish are catch and release here so the population stays strong.

Bottom fishing and jigging has produced well as of late.

Plenty of snapper around, with the smaller ones making great table fare. We try to release the big breeder fish and we have released 30 to 45 lb cubera snapper lately. Cubera is one of my favorites because the odds are in favor of the fish. If you don’t turn them fast, they will escape into a rocky haunt and it is over. Some nice hefty albaco jack (sometimes known as Pacific amberjack) have moved onto the deeper reefs.
