It’s been a solid week of Bullshark fishing in Gabon, made even better with Jako Lucas and his dad, Dirk, in camp. The two of them have been fishing together since Jako was a kid growing up in South Africa—mainly chasing ragged tooth sharks and bronze whalers on the Eastern Cape. So this catch felt like it brought things full circle.
Here’s how Chris, one of our guides, tells it:
“We got down to the mouth and Dirk caught a decent jack in the surf. We rigged it with a 14/0 circle in its back and swam it out past the backline on the south point. After about 10 minutes, the jack went ballistic. I passed the rod to Jako—something big was on it. A bull shark smashed it right on the surface, clear as day. Jako set the hook and it took off, peeling about 80 metres of line before doing those classic side-to-side arcs. After around 20 minutes we had it in close, snapped a few quick pics, and let it go.”
A proper fish—and a proper moment. Made better by the fact that Jako landed it with his old man right there, both of them still chasing big predators together after all these years.
